The
Dogo Argentino as a guardian.
The Dogo Argentino is very loyal and very close to his
boss and family, specially towards children.Their
tolerance towards children is tremendous, how much they
have to "suffer" from them sometimes(such as
pulling the ears etc.) It is important to know that there
are no restrictions for the Dogo in raising him, with one
exception:the hard way! I come to this subject later. In
the socialisation stadium it is important to bring him as
much as possible in contact with other animals and most
of all other dogs.
To make him a good companion to take out for a walk it is
neccesary to learn him the needed obedience commands as
soon as possible and be very consequent with this.
It is forbidden to make a Dogo "sharp"! His
instinct will only function wenn needed. Unfortunately it
is quite easy for the "stupid and
unresponsible" people to enlighten his instinct with
all it's consequences....Due to this the Dogo Argentino
sometimes get the attention of the wrong people and we
must be very alert for this and be very selective in
choosing the right people for the Dogo Argentino. The
Dogo Argentino is not for people who want to compensate
their own personality with the Dogo if they see him as a
fightingmachine!!!!
If you are sure that the Dogo is obedient also in a
stadium of excitement, you can try Schutzhundtraining
with him.The obedience is crucial for this task.
A natural upgrowing between human and dog is for the Dogo
Argentino the best. Some time later, about the 6-7
months, you keep him separate from visitors and friends to
complete his natural friendliness towards people with a
little distrust. So he won't be an "everybody's
friend".
For one mistake I must warn:the hard or even beating!
This is NOT the way to learn a Dogo Argentino. As hard as
the Dogo may seem towards the outside world as soft he is
towards his own family!! So you need a lot of tact and
patience in the learning/training process of the Dogo
Argentino.
The most important command is "let loose". This
is needed because his instinct tells him to keep the
"prey" in a hold (good grip) because that saves
his life on the hunt. Tricks to let him "loose"
are useless, this only stimulates his temperament!
When the Dogo got a bit more popular he was sometimes
introduced as a working dog (Police Dog).Examples are
:"Le Gendarmerie National" in France, and also
used for this in the USA.
For a workingdog such as Policedog his "fightingdog
qualities" are not so usefull and in this
perspective he will never be a expert in this task. It
showed that he had a long learning proces, attacked very
fanatical and could be forced to "let loose"
very difficult. For this task there is a lot of work to
do with this breed and in my opinion they have the
capacity for it even this is not typical for the breed.
One Dogo Argentino is known to be trained succesfull as a
guide for blind people. This is also an exception.
Nowadays the Dogo has proven most of all to be an
excellent guardian and a Superior Housecompanion!!!!.
Only his appearance does it's work! The Dogo Argentino
has a good future in perspective because of his well
balanced character and we must be very carefull with the
breed
to make it not too popular because that brought no good
for any kind of dog.
