About the Breed
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3
The fysical and
psychological qualtities of purebreed dogs are stated in
a standard. Each part of the dog is richly described. The
type however is not exactly or easily jugded, because a
type is not to be put in words.
This is however the
task of the judge and only by specialised in Dogos. It is
the biggest goal of the breeders to maintain the correct
type, in such a way that it still is a good reflection of
the standard, a good representative of the breed.
That types of the
Dogo are correct to the standard but still show amongst
them a lot of variation in appearance, is with no breed
so evident as with the Dogo Argentino.
This is due to the fact that it is a working dog for
different tasks which demands different types. Also you
see difference in types due to the region they come from.
An expert of the breed can see from which region a
specific Dogo comes from. For example in Argentina they
don´t take the effort to travel a long way for a stud to
look for the best to breed with....unfortunately I must
say that this is not only so in Argentina....
The Standard allows
some space for the engaged breeder to give it his own
touch so ther is still some adventure for them but it is
imortant for the future that we try to achieve to come to
a more similar type. this probably asks for a more
clearer standard.

The F.C.I.
Standard (1973):
Standard For El
Dogo Argentino
General Appearance:
In describing El Dogo Argentino, Antonio Nores Martinez
used to say."...harmonically beautiful, within the
physical parameters required to perform its duty"
and "...it is the only white, short-haired dog of
its size and weight which are optimum to achieve its
work."
These statements are clearly indicative that, in this
breed, form follows function; that color and size are
basic identifying attributes, closely related to work
performance.
Developed to find, chase, and struggle with large,
dangerous predators, these canines must be endowed with
superior bone and muscular mass. Their large, massive
head, proudly supported by a thick but graceful neck that
connects to a well balanced body, in turn supported by
straight, sturdy forelegs and stong, normally-angulated
hindquarters. The thick, long tail hangs naturally to the
hocks and is carried in a smooth upwards curve.
Faults:
Flaccid, overweight
dogs must be severly penalized. The "White King of
the Pampas" is a proud animal, conscious of its
power, which makes it reliable and self-confident. Its
striking appearance, friendly disposition, and gallant
behavior have earned him this name. Females are slightly
smaller than males and look distinctively feminine but
weakening substance ore structure.
Judges should first
consider the general apearance and overall balance of El
Dogo Argentino, utmost consideration given to type.
Special attention should be afforded correctness,
followed by a thorough evaluation of gait efficiency.
